I both project managed and worked production for first party disc games.
As project manager, I communicated back and forth with the packaging team at Microsoft as well as with the publisher who had created the initial artwork to ensure that we met the planned release date. I ordered print proofs from outside vendors and had them sent around to all the stakeholders to ensure that everyone was satisfied with the finished product.
I was typically given a handoff from the publisher that would require a lot of adjustment in order to be printable and localizable. I checked colors, ensured there was space for localization, ensured the proper templated language was used, and verified the age rating.
That process resulted in the US production part that was then used to create the 1 and 2 language localization masters used to create the rest of the parts needed around the globe. Because these initial parts were used to create many other parts down the line, both speed and precision were crucial.
